At the same time, our signature detailing—like the hand-stamped leather patch (vegan patch coming soon) and branded hardware—adds a unique touch. What is nep denim?
Nep selvedge is a type of high-quality denim fabric characterized by visible “neps,” or small clusters of fibers that protrude from the surface, creating a textured and irregular appearance. The irregular texture of this type of selvedge denim gives it a vintage, rugged look. Nep denim will develop a unique patina and fade over time, emphasizing the neps and adding character to the fabric. The aging process enhances the fabric’s irregularities, making each pair of jeans uniquely yours.
Despite its textured appearance, nep selvedge denim maintains the durability and strength typical of high-quality selvedge denim. The weaving process ensures a dense and robust fabric. Nep selvedge denim is produced on vintage shuttle looms like smooth selvedge fabric. These neps appear when the shuttle loom’s speed and tension are adjusted. The adjustments create loom chatter, allowing the neps to protrude from the fabric’s surface.
About the fit and sizing:
Our CS-1 Cobra slim straight is a medium-rise slim fit cut slim from the hip through the thigh. The leg opening is straight from the knee down, offering a clean and streamlined silhouette without being too tight. For sizing, going up one size from your usual jeans is recommended for instant comfort.
Choosing your usual size is recommended if you plan to break these in for a while before the first wash—the 12 oz. nep selvedge fabric breaks in pretty quickly. The waist may be tight the first few wears, but it loosens up pretty quickly. Going this route is ideal if you want a more custom fit in the long run.

How about break-in?
At first glance, our 12 oz. Nihon Menpu nep selvedge looks like it would be rigid and stiff, like typical raw denim. Thanks to the lighter weight of the denim, these have a shorter break-in period. The sample pair we produced was worn and tested for a few weeks, and we noticed that they were breaking in and softening up pretty fast. Whiskering on the front hip area and honeycombs on the rear knee were starting to be prevalent in our short break-in period.
This 12 oz. selvedge denim offers a good balance between durability and comfort. It is sturdy enough to provide long-lasting wear but also flexible and breathable, making it comfortable for everyday use. Where these jeans will shine is in warmer climates thanks to the weaving process giving the fabric linen-like properties.
